The Counties of Ireland

About 400 years ago Ireland was separated into Counties by the English crown. Nothing much has changed since then and the Counties remain the same.

There are 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland and 6 in Northern Ireland.

It was also divided into provinces in the ancient era, and each one was ruled by a different King.

When we talk about provinces of Ireland, they are Munster, Leinster, Ulster and Connaught. The boundaries of the provinces correspond to the county borders.

The Patron Saint of Ireland

Saint Patrick is the celebrated patron saint of Ireland but he was not Irish born but was imprisoned from Britain by Irish invaders to work as a shepherd.

He escaped and later had a vision wherein God told him to go back to Ireland as a messenger. He is accredited for bringing Christianity to Ireland, and you can see the vestiges of St Patrick’s era throughout Ireland.
