The Sutherland name comes from the age of Norse Rule over most of the Islands and the Highlands is also known as Strathnaver.
The landscape is rugged with a sparse population. You will see very high cliffs on the sea coast forming ragged inlets on the West of the county and sandy beaches towards the North.
